Default seahorse pouch evacuation

Not sure I should post this here but just thought it might interest those of you who have seahorses or who are thinking of getting them.

My male seahorse Larry has problems with excess air in his pouch sometimes. Not an uncommon problem apparently. The last time he had it, I was able to simply push on his pouch and get the air to bubble out. This time it was a little trickier and I had to help the pouch open as well to get the air out.

Well it did work eventually and today he is swimming fine again (they float to the top when gas is stuck in the pouch). So you would think he would be grateful. But NO, he is PISSED at me. Every time I go close to the tank he turns his back and faces the back of the tank. Too funny...

Oh and by the way, a good article on how to do this

So you're saying Larry has gas and you helped him pass it. I would be pissed too.

Well the first time I did some months ago it opened up by itself once I put pressure on the pouch. But this time that was not working. And the poor guy was losing weight because he had to work so hard to get anywhere and not just float along the top.

I hated it doing it believe me but was afraid the alternative was to see him waste away. I used a blunt ended plastic syringe I had from when Madison was little and I would have to syringe medicine in to her mouth. I just sort of gently pried open the pouch while I pushed on his pouch.

Well Larry hated me doing it believe me. But it worked and all the gas came out. At the time, he thrashed his tail at me and still won't look at me or snick his mysis even from the baster (used to take it from my hand).

He must be feeling better because I saw him chasing Puff around the tank earlier!!

Well it will soon be his lucky day since I am in the process of getting another Erectus female.

Good news - Larry will snick mysis from the baster again and look at me when I come to the tank. Still wont come up to my hand but at least he has started to forgive me!

Bad news - now that he can swim he is feeling frisky again and I saw him tackle Puff a number of times tonight. Because he is half again her size he just sort of pounces on her and wraps his tail around her. So now SHE is mad at me ("why did you have to go and fix him up!").

I sure hope I dont have to perform surgery again for him!
