Here is the pic of the two that have been courting ( I think) Top one is the one that is eating the eggs and bottom one is laying them on the overflow, as if you could not tell by the speech bubbles....

Not 100% sure. One of the other discus guys will probably be able to give you a positive ID.

Wow this is great Cammie!

The first few spawns of many cichlids turns out to be a lunch buffet, even after the eggs hatch.

Also, two females will sometimes "spawn" although it's usually in the absence of a male. One set of females at Tideline Aquatics in Charleston SC would spawn every week or so. Every time I went in there, new eggs.

Well at least, or I hope, that I am doing something right or I am assuming she would not have laid if the params were not to her liking. I am not trying to have fry anyway but it sure would have been a bonus!!! Maybe one day Pretty cool to see though!!

Yeah there is not much you do about it at this point. If she lays eggs and he leaves them alone, they won't won't be fertilized. So it is up to the male discus whether he is going to eat them or fertilize them. This is why mated pairs sell for a lot of money. Even a mature male can continue eating the eggs or choose not to fertilize them.

If they they do become mated pairs and you want fry, I would put them in a different tank. Once the frys are close to "hatching", there are 2 thoughts. Some people try to remove the parents others keep them in. In nature the male typically takes care of the young but both provide food via their slime coat and from the inside of their mouths. Some think the discus are eating their young but often they are using their mouth for protection and feeding...kinda like ramoras and a shark's mouth.

Cool...yeah it has not been my intention to mate them so I am just going to let them be at thsi point. however if they do become successful it would be kind fo sad for me not to do my part. but we will play it by ear. Right now i think they are just trying to figure it out. i will keep everyone updated. i will be going otu of twon over the next three days so who knows what i will come home to i will likely do a water change tonight though so it may mess up their ambiance ( sp?).
