Default Puffers

Anyone ever try to convert the brackish puffers to pure salt? Years ago as a kid I saw one in a fishtank on tv with some cheesy fish tank cleaning demo my friend got.

Yup, takes about a week just to be safe. Most brackish fishes can be converted to full seawater. It is arguable that there is a negative impact on life span but I have not seen evidence to support either way.

There are many puffer species sold in shops. Make sure you know exactly which kind you're buying and check its salinity tolerance range on one of the puffer websites/forums. "Walmart Puffer" is probably not specific enough.
