Just get any regular old black sand and mother-crush some live rock rubble and presto! Instant black and white sand with buffering power.

Years of not buying stuff has led to some inventive strategies. One of the 5# hand mallets really does the trick, just remember to wear eye protection.

I have a rubber mallet in the workshop and I have a meat tenderizer (I use that to break up cyclopeeze bars). One should work!
