There was a presentation at MACNA in Atlanta where they were testing various lights and as a by product of the research found that painting the background reduces the light in the tank. The theory is that the paint reduces refraction between the front and back of the pane of glass. Using a film that adheres to the glass reduced the available light just like the paint did. However, a similar color background with a hair's breath of space between the background and glass did not have this effect.

Would this really have any negative growth affect on the animals?

I don't care how you do it tanks with visible wires hanging around them bother me. I will always keep the backs of my tanks painted. Looking at the wall behind the tank just doesn't do anything for me.

Mask off the front 3 and load the gun up black single stage Auto lacquer. It has to be the most scratch resistant I have seen but is expensive luckily my Brother in law is sprays cars.

I agree. But everyone is entitled to their own.

If your having growth and everything is happy is the "reduction of light" or "refraction" that big of an issue. If it is true then that means we are wasting some electricity but gaining a cosmetic detail. Maybe we should just surround the tank in mirrors and remove one for viewing pleasure only.
