I thought the purple pinwheel was just the top portion, similar to the spare yellow one that came with the pump. I could be wrong though, it may be the whole impeller. This is the pic of the one I was looking at

I was thinking of getting a pinwheel for my older NW 150. I wonder how big of a difference it will make?

If you are having start up issues, your best bet is to replace the entire impeller assembly (magnet, shaft and needle wheel). I had the same issue with a Sedra 3500 on my 1st Euro Reef. If you were to pull your existing impeller assembly and compare it next to a new assembly you will quickly notice that the old assemblies magnet is swollen. This swelling, of the magnet, is common and will often prevent the motor from starting up, without some assistance (like blowing down the airline). I am experiencing the same problem now on my 2nd Euro Reef (Sedra 5000 pump), and will likely be ordering a replacement impeller assembly this week.

Probably right Eric. Not sure though. Where and what kind of shaft should I buy for the sicci pump on the octo extreme

Pin Wheel Impeller Assembly for Sicce PSK 2500 water pump - AquaCave

Cammie, it looks like the impeller assembly for the Sicci pumps do not include the shaft. You should be able to use the shaft from your original impeller. The magnet is usually the problem.

Is the extreme alot better than the newer needle wheel skimmers?

That's the same body as the extreme. Can't tell if the NWB one has a bubble plate or not from the pic.
The biggest difference is the pump. The extreme uses a sicce 2500, the NWB uses a octo pump. Despite all it's idiosyncrasies, the sicce is a really great skimmer pump, low wattage-high air flow.

IMO, it's worth the extra $30-$40

It does have the bubble plate. I'm just thinking maybe the octo pump doesn't have the potential startup issues.

I went into a large saltwater store that was running these HUGE Reef Octopus Skimmers on all their DT's and they were using 2 octo pumps and looked like a big version of the link I posted above and they highly recommended them.

I finally got my ATO hooked up so I could fine tune the skimmer. Thing is still pulling like a beast though.
