Let me preface this by saying I'm a novice to coral and this is my first attempt at making a reef tank. I've picked up a few pieces over the last few weeks, more just browsing and purchasing whatever looks interesting.

I purchased this piece yesterday and have noticed what seems to be tentacles protruding from the back of the rock with bulbs on the end. I know some coral feed in this manner so I'm just curious if this is typical? It's not protruding from anywhere but from the back.

totally normal. Those are sweepers/feeding cnidicites. If you watch closely they will protrude where the green center meets the red outer ring. I would assume that is a merletti yes?

haha honestly, i'm not entirely certain. I'm so new to this and i ask about so many pieces, by the time i leave a lfs i've forgotten exactly what it was called.

I do believe it's supposed to be this species of brain:

I can see the sweepers but they're a lot smaller than those I took the pic of which are protruding from the back of the frag.
