Totally. You can successfully run any sized tank, and you don't really even need hob filters. It would require weekly water changes instead of monthly.

Yes, it certainly can. I ran a 40 breeder with a HOB Refugium, and an HOB skimmer, and it was one of the coolest tanks I've had.
I have a 60 cube with 20g sump with hang on back filter. Aquamaxxx HOB. Its rated for 75g and is a beast.
Yes and you can even mod the aquaclear 110 into a fuge pretty easy. I am just starting a 37 gallon with a hob filter, I thought about a skimmer but decided I would just do weekly water changes. Softies and lps in the tank will work well since they like dirty water compared to sps.
