I guess I shall be the guinea pig in the next coming months. Good riddance to filter socks. I plan to route my tanks drain through my skimmer first, then the radial flow filter (then into a 40 gallon packed with chaeto / 300 watts of led and finally into a section with a few liters of sintered glass media).
My question is do you think it would be better to have the radial flow filter first or the skimmer first. I assumed skimmer as it would be less specific and keep less detritus from settling and 'staying' in my flow filter. Any ideas?
maybe two radial flow filters would be a good idea in tandem just after the skimmer.. hmm
I have seen mega ones for aquaculture operations....but never a home tank sized version....I like it and might have to try this myself as well.
I would actually run your skimmer after the radial(s) because the large particulate should be removed by the radial(s) and thats less crap bogging down skimmer efficiency before it hits the cheato bed.
The key to a really good one is making sure your main vessel is tapered towards the bottom so the wastes will "sink" along the grade and concentrate in the center. Also leave room to put a bulkhead in at the bottom so you can have a waste water drain for easier cleaning.
Also I was thinking if two radial flow filters were used, the first could be designed to settle bigger particles and then the second focused on smaller particles
