Alternatives needed for Ceramic Pump Shaft Replacement

I have a quietone 4000 pump and the ceramic shaft is broken. I would like to try and buy a piece of ceramic rod or stainless steel and replace it myself. The replacement part assembly is $22, which seems outrageous, since two of the small parts in the replacement assembly are not needed, I have them.

I live in Raleigh/Cary. Any hobby or craft store sell ceramic or stainless steel rods this thin. I don't have the diameter needed, but you generally know that are less that an eighth thick, maybe 2 mm.

HD and Lowes did not carry any SS rods this thin.

Any thoughts?

The sicce 2500 and the QO 3000/4000 are almost identical (both made by sicce) So it stands to reason you could go with this one. CRE Loaded Ecommerce

I'll be changing out my 4000 this weekend and will try to verify if it's the same size, if you can wait that long

I use Acrylic rod in my Mag Drive 12. It works great. Any craft store should be able to order it for you if they don't have it. Danner Mfg want $30+ for my so called rebuild kit. lol The Acrylic rod was $3 and have enough for a few shaft.

OK, here's what I found, some good/some bad.

The sicce and the QO 3000 (4000's the same but I used a 3000 for the comparison)

The shaft's are exactly the same diameter but the one on the sicce is 1/4" longer than the QO shaft. I imagine you could get the carbon fiber replacement from the above link and trim 1/4" off but I've read on RC the carbon fiber isn't as smooth as the ceramic (makes more noise)

The impellers are exactly the same on all three pumps. I installed the sicce impeller with a purple pinwheel on the quiet one 3000 and bam, fired right up. It's not as strong as the sicce but it did work. I then took the QO 3000 impeller magnet and removed the stock impeller and put the white stock pinwheel from the sicce on the magnet. Perfect fit but the pins from the white impeller hit the volute cover of the pump and prevented startup. The pins of the white pinwheel are a fraction of an inch longer than the PPW.

I can continue, if anyones interested but long story short, the QO 4000 and the sicce 2500 are almost exactly the same pump. Seems the sicce has a longer shaft and different bushing to move the pins on the needlewheel off the impeller cover. Shouldn't be too hard to mod the QO to accept either the stock pinwheel (white) or the purple pinwheel. Either dremelling out the impeller cover slightly (plastic not too thick) or trimming the pinwheel pins a fraction should eliminate any noise or start-up problems

A disc sander or a dremel w/ the sanding drums would quickly file those needles down--- this is good news!

Might be better to ream out the impeller cover a little. That way the pump should be able to get a little more air into the mix. It's not going to pull anywhere near the amount of air (I've seen #'s in the 20's for the QO, the sicce does in the 30's). Not a lot of room to drill but I've got a few of the intake (threaded) covers that you can play with. It'll give you more room to hook up a venturi, the stock QO cover doesn't have a lot of room to hook a venturi to.

This past weekend I broke the shaft of my sicce pump. I pulled the shaft out of a quiet one 3000, cut the red, back rubber bushing on in half and placed the QO shaft in the sicce. Works pretty good even though the new shaft isn't as long as the sicce's. The size difference isn't much, less than 1/4", so it works as long as you place the impeller loosely in both bushing ends.

I think I may have a solution for you, if you haven't already got a replacement. I went by a craft store today to find a replacement for the QO shaft I swapped for my busted Sicce pump. A crochet needle or knitting needle, US #5 (3.75mm) is the exact diameter as the Quiet one ceramic shaft. I put a plastic one in for now, not sure how long that'll hold out for though.

I also cut a couple stainless steel rods to size but I'm a little nervous on them rusting out. The standard knitting needles can be cut in half to make 2 shafts. They're fairly cheap at a little over $1 for the plastic and $5 for a pack of 3 SS knitting needles.

i would look elsewhere for replacement pump parts than the mfg I got the replacement impeller for my Danner off ebay for 12.00 and its the fractionating one so my calcium reactor is really working better than before
